Why work from Hout Bay
Hout Bay isn’t Sea Point or the CBD. It’s quieter, further out, and it has fewer cafe options overall. What you get instead is quality. The neighbourhood has a different rhythm. You’ll work a few focused hours, then actually leave the cafe and take a walk along the water or grab lunch somewhere proper instead of eating at your desk out of habit.
If you’re choosing between Hout Bay and closer neighbourhoods, you’re trading proximity for quality of life. The cafe scene reflects that. You won’t find 20 laptop-friendly spots to rotate through, but the cafes to work from in Hout Bay that we’re about to cover are worth it.
South Yeaster Bakery
This is our top pick, and it’s the best cafe in Hout Bay. Full stop.
4 The Promenade, Hout Bay. Open Tuesday to Saturday. Coffee, naturally-leavened pastries (almond croissants, kimchi gruyère croissants that actually justify their price), and a space designed with obvious care. The owners, siblings Brode and Amber Gleeson, are both qualified chefs, and it shows in every detail. The coffee is excellent, the pastries are made in-house, and the vibe is warm without being precious.
The catch: it’s only open five days a week, closed Sunday and Monday. This isn’t a seven-day option.
Don’t let that stop you. Plan your work week around it. If you’re staying in Hout Bay for a month, this is where you’ll want to be for your focused morning sessions. The space is quiet enough to concentrate, comfortable enough to stay for three hours, and the product is good enough that you won’t resent the ritual.
Bootleggers
It’s a chain. That’s fine. Bootleggers works because it does the basics reliably.
Shop 13, Oakhurst Farm Stall, Hout Bay Main Road. Good coffee, consistent food quality, comfortable seating for a full workday, reliable WiFi, reasonable prices. You’ll know exactly what you’re getting when you walk in. No surprises, no disappointment. It’s the dependable daily option, the one you go back to when you need to get work done without thinking about the cafe itself.
If South Yeaster is the occasional treat, Bootleggers is the everyday workspace.
The Pelican
37 Victoria Avenue. Restaurant and creperie with free WiFi, a laid-back atmosphere, and friendly staff. Good coffee. Decent breakfast and lunch menu. It’s a fine option for a work session, particularly if you want to eat while you work.
Don’t go in expecting the best cafe in Hout Bay. It’s solid, not exceptional. But it’s open daily, the space is comfortable, and nobody will rush you. Fine for a morning or afternoon session.
Dario’s Cafe
30 Main Road. Italian-run, warm staff, pleasant atmosphere. The WiFi works well (one reviewer claims it’s “the fastest in Cape Town”, take that with scepticism, but connectivity is solid). Last we checked, they run an afternoon coffee special between 2 and 5pm. The menu is hearty and Italian-influenced.
Good choice if you’re rotating between a few spots and want somewhere with character and decent connectivity.
Worth a stop but not a full workday
Deli Social — 2 Dorman Way, next to Bootleggers. Excellent food, limited seating. Stop here for lunch between work sessions, but don’t plan a full morning around it.
Houtbay Coffee — Small-batch roastery by the river at Mainstream Shopping Centre. Arguably the best coffee roast in the area. Seating is minimal, so it’s not practical as a workspace. Go for excellent beans, not a desk.
Delish Restaurant — 8 Beach Crescent. Free WiFi, multiple nooks, pet-friendly, full bar. More of a long-lunch spot than a dedicated work cafe. Use it for a leisurely late-morning session when you’re happy to chat and be interrupted.
The practical stuff
Getting there: From Sea Point or the CBD, budget 15 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic. The drive is quick outside peak hours but can slow down significantly during morning and evening rush. Public transport is limited, so a rental car or reliable Uber routine is worth budgeting for. Parking is easy, even at peak times.
Internet: Fibre is available in Hout Bay through providers including Vumatel and Openserve, but coverage varies by street. Don’t assume your accommodation is on a reliable line, test it before committing to a longer stay. Mobile data as backup is essential. Check your specific address with your landlord or the ISP before settling in.
What to bring: A portable charger and a mobile data SIM. Most cafes close by 4 or 5pm, so plan your workday accordingly. If you tend to work late, you’ll be working from your accommodation after that.
